About the Clean Air Lawrence Coalition

Clean Air Lawrence (CAL) is a grassroots coalition of individual residents and community groups that are concerned about the harmful health effects of secondhand smoke. In 2003-4, CAL spearheaded a successful effort to pass an ordinance to ban smoking in all workplaces, including bars and restaurants, in Lawrence, Kan. The ban was adopted by the Lawrence City Commission on May 5, 2004, and became effective July 1, 2004. For more information, contact Kathy Bruner at 785-843-7902.

Groups in the Lawrence area that support clean indoor air ordinances include:

• CHIP (Community Health Improvement Project) Special Committee on Tobacco Use, a federally funded tobacco education group that provides presentations and information about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke. For more information on CHIP, contact Melissa Smith at 785-864-9572.
• SAS (Students Against Smoking), a group of students from Lawrence, Baldwin and Eudora who seek to empower youth with the knowledge and skills to educate their peers about the dangers of tobacco use.
